Description
This quick and easy biscuit recipe requires only three ingredients—self-rising flour, cold butter, and buttermilk—to create golden, flaky biscuits in just 20 minutes.
Ingredients
- 2 cups self-rising flour
- ¼ cup cold butter
- ⅔ – ¾ cup buttermilk
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C).
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the self-rising flour and cold butter. Use a pastry cutter or fork to cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add the buttermilk, stirring gently until the dough comes together. Be careful not to overmix.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it a few times to bring it together.
- Pat the dough to a thickness of about ½ inch.
- Using a 2 1/2-inch diameter biscuit cutter, cut out biscuits and place them on a baking sheet or in a cast-iron skillet, with the edges touching for soft-sided biscuits or spaced apart for crispier sides.
- Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- Ensure the butter is very cold to achieve flaky layers.
- If you don’t have self-rising flour, you can make your own by combining 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 2 teaspoons of baking powder, and ½ teaspoon of salt.
- To make a buttermilk substitute, mix 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar with 1 cup of milk and let it sit for 5 minutes.
